My first home. Brooklyn to the death of me.
1. Coney Island
Coney Island is a residential Brooklyn neighborhood that morphs into a relaxation and entertainment destination each summer. Locals and tourists crowd its beach, the Wonder Wheel and Luna Park, an amusement park featuring the famed Cyclone roller coaster. Street performers, the Circus Sideshow and the Mermaid Parade in June lend an eccentric vibe. Nathan’s Famous is known for its July 4th hot-dog eating contest. Hands down, my favorite place to go as soon as summer breaks.
2. Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, located in Mount Prospect Park in central Brooklyn, adjacent to Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Museum, is a 52-acre garden holding over 14,000 taxa of plants. It includes a number of specialty “gardens within the Garden”, plant collections, the Steinhardt Conservatory that houses the C. V. Starr Bonsai Museum, three climate-themed plant pavilions, a white cast-iron-and-glass aquatic plant house, and an art gallery.
3. Brooklyn Bridge Park
Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre park on the Brooklyn side of the East River. The park is located on a 1.3-mile plot of land from Atlantic Avenue in the south, under the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and past the Brooklyn Bridge, to Jay Street north of the Manhattan Bridge. From north to south, the pier includes the preexisting Empire–Fulton Ferry and Main Street Parks; the historic Fulton Ferry Landing; and Piers 1–6, which contain various playgrounds and residential developments. The park also includes Empire Stores and the Tobacco Warehouse, two 19th-century structures, and is a part of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, a series of parks and bike paths around Brooklyn.
4. DUMBO Waterfront
In the 19th century, DUMBO was the heart of Brooklyn’s bustling commercial and industrial waterfront. The now-converted warehouses and factories re-define this neighborhood with everything from long promenades to children’s playgrounds, benches for sitting, water gardens, grass, rolling hills, and a carousel with beautiful glass box housing designed by Norman Foster.
5. Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill
Sugarcane located on DUMBO’s Waterfront is by far one of my favorite restaurants for its food, drinks and ambiance. If you do nothing at all, do this!
